2008 Waugh Junior Red Blend

In its truest sense, the term Meritage is used to describe a California wine made in the Bordeaux style, combining several red varietals to create one harmonious wine from the parts of many.

2008 was an outstanding year for the vineyards of California.  So much so that the extra fruit the harvest produced gave me enough juice to experiment with a wine that could take the wonderful characteristics of our various single vineyards and blend them together into something truly special.

But we wanted to take it one step further – create a wine at a price that could make it a daily sipper.

Taking six of our distinct red wines we are thrilled to introduce our first Meritage blend called Waugh Junior.  Though once you taste it, you’ll think it’s anything but small!   Consisting of  Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Barbera, this rich and luscious combination delivers the classic softness that’s become a hallmark of Waugh Cellars wines for years while offering an amazing depth of flavors.

The aromas elevate from the glass starting with dark blackberry, cherry, and cassis rounded out by subtle hints of seasoned French oak. The entry of this wine is massive and leads into a lush middle framed by bright acid and supple tannins. The finish is long, lingering and filled with soft velvety tannins.

Enjoy it tonight.  And every night.
